Osteomalacia in young captive crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus).

The clinical signs of osteomalacia in year old crocodiles were kyphoscoliosis, "glassy teath", "rubber jaws" and extreme weakness. Treatment with high oral doses of calcium led to slow improvement. After six months the surviving animal could walk again, but the vertebral column remained deformed after two years.

Mycobacterial infection in Nile crocodile tissues sent from a private zoo was characterized pathomorphologically and immunohistochemically in this case. Macroscopically, multifocal, greyish-white areas ranging in size from 1 mm to 5 mm were seen in the lung, liver, and spleen.

The pleural cavity of the Nile crocodile is divided into two separate cavities by means of a complete mediastinum. The pleural cavity contains the lungs, while the heart is situated in its own cavity, the pericardial cavity. The pleural cavity is separated from the hepatic coelom, which contains the liver, by the post-pulmonary membrane.
