Patterns of heating in the body trunk and tail of Crocodylus porosus

Abstract When a 4.9 kg Crocodylus porosus was heated in the sun, different organs of the body heated at different rates. The tail centre, heart, liver and lungs warmed more rapidly than the cloaca, ventral thorax and ventral regions of the tail. The circulatory system influences the order of heating of regions within the trunk.

Social interactions compromise thermoregulation in crocodiles Crocodylus johnstoni and Crocodilus porosus

Observations of aggressive encounters between crocodiles in the field showed that intraspecific aggression compromised thermoregulation by subordinate animals. Intraspecific aggression may thus trigger a physiological mechanism for dispersal in crocodiles.

Dispersal of Hatchling Crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) (Reptilia, Crocodilidae)

Dispersal of hatchling crocodiles was investigated by mark-recapture. The rate of movement of crocodiles less than 6 months old was unaffected by their age or the salinity of the water in which they were living. Movement was not random and patterns of movement differed between the lower and middle reaches of rivers.
