Spatio‐temporal patterns, associated factors and mitigation of tiger and leopard attacks on people in western Himalayas

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Coexistence with large carnivores becomes extremely difficult in areas where there are large number of attacks on humans. An understanding of the factors that explain the spatio‐temporal context of such attacks would guide policy and management to mitigate conflict, conserve carnivores and assist coexistence.

The ecology and deterrence of crop-raiding elephants: research progress

open access: yesPachyderm, 1996
Only the abstract and a summary of the presentation and following discussion were published. An ongoing project in Sengwa Wildlife Research Area is examining the feeding ecology and movement pattern of bull elephants which raid crops and exploring a number of other factors which influence this behaviour.

School‐Based Educational Involvement for Families With a History of Parental Incarceration: A Systematic Review

open access: yesPsychology in the Schools, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT An estimated 5.1 million children in the United States have experienced parental incarceration (Annie E. Casey Foundation 2016). Only recently has research begun considering protective factors in mitigating negative school‐based outcomes associated with this experience. Parental educational involvement is a critical factor in student outcomes,

Effects of bioinsecticide exposure route on aphids and their natural enemies in oilseed rape

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Fatty acids, silicone polymers and surfactants reduced aphid numbers but caused natural enemy mortality under direct exposure, while minimal residual activity suggests potential for targeted, compatible use in integrated pest management. Abstract BACKGROUND Myzus persicae Sulzer and Brevicoryne brassicae L.

An update on crop-raiding by elephants at Bia Conservation Area, Ghana from 2004 to 2006

open access: yesPachyderm, 2008
The study updates the post 2004 elephant crop-raiding situation around Bia Conservation Area (BCA). This was done through an analysis of data on elephant damage from crop-raiding report forms completed for all raids occurring between 2004 and 2006 at ...

Community composition, abundance and activity‐density of carabids and staphylinids depend on prey abundance and adjacent habitat even in diverse agricultural landscapes

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Carabid and staphylinid communities are shaped by adjacent habitat type, prey availability and landscape context, influencing natural pest control across agricultural landscapes. Abstract BACKGROUND The functioning of agroecosystems depends on key ecosystem processes that deliver ecosystem services, yet agricultural management has increasingly shifted ...

Do cattle determine elephant distribution in the Red Volta Valley of northern Ghana?

open access: yesPachyderm, 2002
Elephants in the northeastern Ghana border area adjacent Burkina Faso move along the Red Volta River Valley raiding crops enroute, and routinely cross back and forth between the countries.

Host plant‐specific volatiles of Beauveria bassiana‐colonized plants initiate trophic plant–aphid–predator cascades

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Endophytic colonization of melon plants by B. bassiana modifies the crop volatile profiles in a genotype‐dependent manner. A predator choice is biased toward endophytically colonized plants infested with aphids revealing a guardian within effect of the fungus of great potential in integrated pest management.

Cannibalism in Buchananiella whitei (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) and its intraguild interactions with seven predatory mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae & Laelapidae)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Extraguild prey reduces cannibalism and intraguild predation in Buchananiella whitei, while first‐instar nymphs dominate most predatory mites, with outcomes affected by body size and behavioral traits. Abstract BACKGROUND Cannibalism and intraguild predation (IGP) are common interactions among predators that can influence the effectiveness of ...

Safe Farming: Development of a Prevention System to Mitigate Vertebrates Crop Raiding

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics, 2018
One of the main problems for farmers is the protection of their crops, before and after harvesting, from animals and birds. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a model of safe farming in which the crops will be protected from vertebrates’ attack through a prevention system that is based on Wirelesses Sensors Networks.
