This paper shows how spectral analysis can be used to determine the cyclical nature of crop yields. The number and length of cycles are estimated for corn and wheat in the Corn Helt and the Northern Plains. Several cycles appear to be superimposed over the trend yield.

The main aim of all agricultural research workers is focussed on the problem of maximisation of crop production with minimum cost. Evolution of yielding strains, formulation of economical and profitable manurial programmes, utilisation of abour-saving implements, economic use of water for irrigation and tapping to the maximum extent all the avilable ...

Weather and the Yield of a Crop
Experimental Agriculture, 1975SUMMARYThe growth of plants is controlled by the availability of photosynthesized carbohydrates. Since both rainfall and sunshine are needed for photosynthesis an empirical expression is proposed which relates vegetative growth to the product of rainfall and bright sunshine hours over a specified period.

Does Crop Insurance Affect Crop Yields?
2007We use administrative data from the Federal crop insurance program to examine how yield distributions change as farmers cycle into and out of the program. We are able to do this by linking many years of crop insurance data by individual farm conditioning observed yields on the particular county and year in which they are observed.
