Altitude or heat training to increase haemoglobin mass and endurance exercise performance in elite sport

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Upper panel, high‐altitude training typically encompasses 3–4 weeks of altitude exposure combined with training either at altitude or at sea level. Following this, a response for haemoglobin mass (Hbmass) is seen in two of three studies, which coincides with some performance gains in <50% of studies.

Sex differences in speed and sub-technique selection in elite sprint cross-country skiers: a time-trial qualification analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Sports and Active Living
PurposeThis study investigated sex differences in speed, sub-technique selection and cycle characteristics during a sprint cross-country skiing time-trial qualification in the classical style.MethodsThirty elite- to world-class cross-country skiers (15 ...

Intramuscular pathways of maladaptation in overtraining syndrome

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The transition from adaptive overreaching to maladaptive overtraining and mechanisms through which excessive training load can lead to performance decline. Four interconnected pathophysiological domains are highlighted: neural fatigue, involving both central and peripheral components such as altered sensory feedback and reflex ...

Comparative Analysis of the Diagonal Stride Technique during Roller Skiing and On-Snow Skiing in Youth Cross-Country Skiers

open access: yesSensors
Roller skiing is one primary form of training method as it is an off-snow equivalent to cross-country (XC) skiing during the dry land preseason training, but the results could only be applied to on-snow skiing with appropriate caution.

Mechanisms of haemoglobin mass expansion following heat stress

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Theorised mechanisms of heat stress‐induced erythropoiesis which may facilitate the expansion of haemoglobin mass. A, acute: heat stress‐induced renal ischaemia. Redistribution of blood flow away from the kidneys to facilitate thermoregulation during heat stress could reduce renal oxygen delivery, subsequently lowering renal PO2${

Determinants of maximal oxygen uptake in highly trained females and males: a mechanistic study of sex differences using advanced invasive methods

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The results from this study show that maximal cardiac output, stroke volume and leg blood flow are similar between highly trained females and males after normalisation to lean body mass (LBM). However, the 10% higher haemoglobin concentration ([Hb]) and arterial O2 content in males result in higher systemic and leg O2 delivery ...

Skin Impression Modeling Across Different Skin Types Under Different Scenes

open access: yesColor Research &Application, Volume 51, Issue 5, September/October 2026.
How do Chinese perceive skin color of different ethnic groups under different shooting and viewing conditions (i.e., illuminance levels, CCTs, scenes and model‐observer familiarity)? ABSTRACT This paper presents a comprehensive study investigating how facial skin colors influence various impressions across different ethnicities and under different ...
