Defecation in preparation for ecdysis drives microplastic clearance in cricket nymphs

open access: yesPhysiological Entomology, EarlyView.
In preparation for ecdysis, cricket nymphs cease feeding and gradually clear their gut contents via frass production, which removes most ingested MPs from their digestive tract. Following exoskeletal moulting, the foregut lining, including any remaining MPs, is shed and excreted alongside frass approximately 6 h later.

Floral intra‐individual variation differs between morphs and is linked to pollen deposition in self‐incompatible distylous plants

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
For most traits, floral intra‐individual variation was similar between morphs and populations with different pollinator guilds (bees and hummingbirds), potentially facilitating effective pollen transfer in distylous systems. Still, greater variation in corolla length increased pollen deposition in L‐morph flowers in the bee‐pollinated population ...

The impact of the Rhine ROFI on the alongshore variability in cross-shore sediment transport of the Holland coast

open access: yes, 2017
The Rhine ROFI ( region of freshwater influence) is a dynamic area where various processes and timescales come together. Research has shown that stratification caused by the freshwater outflow of the Rhine alters the tidal currents in front of the Dutch ...

The edible brown alga Sargassum fusiforme (Fucales) at the southern distributional limit in mainland Japan has declined on coasts facing the open ocean, showing reduced size and density

open access: yesPhycological Research, EarlyView.
SUMMARY The status of the edible brown alga Sargassum fusiforme (Fucales) in Kagoshima in 2025, located at the southern distributional limit in Kyushu, mainland Japan, was investigated to assess whether its populations were stable or declining, based on comparisons with herbarium specimens and records from previous studies conducted between the 1960s ...

Field‐grown coastal dune plants exhibit similar survival, growth, and biomass in recycled glass substrate and natural beach sand

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Restoration of coastal dunes following tropical storm events often requires renourishment of sand substrate dredged from offshore sources, although dredging has well‐described negative ecological impacts and high economic costs. As a potential solution, recycled glass sand (cullet) made from crushed glass bottles has been proposed as a potential ...

Field‐based evaluation of glass cullet as a supplementary sediment source for coastal restoration

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
There is an ever‐increasing demand for sand to support projects like beach nourishment and dune restoration, but dredging and mining sand causes environmental damage. Demonstrating the environmental and ecological compatibility of crushed and ground glass known as cullet to support coastal restoration projects could simultaneously divert waste from ...
