Flow Scales in Cross-Flow Turbines

2015
This work presents analytical estimates for various flow scales encountered in cross-flow turbines (i.e. Darrieus type or vertical axis) for renewable energy generation (both wind and tidal). These estimates enable the exploration of spatial or temporal interactions between flow phenomena and provide quantitative and qualitative bounds of the three ...

The Jet in Cross-Flow: A Few Remarks on the Cross-Flow Structure Influence

2003
The results of an experimental investigation of the jet in cross-flow mixing zone are presented. The jet emanates perpendicularly from a circular nozzle in a wall with parallel cross-flow, and a jet to cross-flow velocity ratio of 4 is chosen. The cross-flow was of either low turbulence or high turbulence in nature.

Flow patterns of cross-flow around a varicose cylinder

Journal of Visualization, 2005
The near wake of a varicose cylinder has been experimentally investigated using Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and Digital Particle Imaging Velocimetry (DPIV). The work aims to provide understanding to the mechanism of the cross flow around varicose cylinder as well as to comprehend why the introduction of relatively small degrees of spanwise ...

Multiple Tandem Jets in Cross-Flow

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2006
The interaction of multiple tandem jets in a cross-flow has been studied through experiments. Experiments are conducted with 2-8 momentum and buoyant jets discharged into a perpendicular cross-flow. The tracer concentration field is measured by the laser-induced fluorescence technique.

Shear-flow-enhanced barrier crossing

Physical Review E, 2011
We consider a single Brownian particle confined in a double well potential (DWP) and investigate its response to a linear shear flow by means of the probability density and current determined via numerical solution of the Fokker-Planck equation. Besides a shear-dependent distortion of the probability distribution, we find that the associated current ...

Analysis of the flow condition in a cross flow turbine

2014 3rd International Conference on the Developments in Renewable Energy Technology (ICDRET), 2014
Energy insufficiency in developing countries arise when the locally available resources are discarded. Nepal having a huge potential in rural electrification will intensify through the development of Micro Hydro turbines. Cross flow type of hydro turbines are extensively used in micro hydropower in rural areas of Nepal.

Flows generated by the interaction of an inlet and a cross-flow

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2000
Abstract The structure of the flow generated by the interaction of suction into a circular inlet and a cross-flow was studied using flow visualization and measurements with hot-wire and yaw probes. Surface flow visualization tests allowed the identification of a distinct and repeatable flow pattern in the horizontal plane close to the surface ...

MODELING CROSS-CORRELATIONS OF TRAFFIC FLOW

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2010
The study of diverse natural and nonstationary signals has recently become an area of active research for physicists. This is because these signals exhibit interesting dynamical properties such as scale invariance, volatility correlation, heavy tails and fractality.

Unsteady Simulation of Jets in a Cross Flow

Journal of Computational Physics, 1997
Effects of the computational time step and grid stretching on numerical solutions of a two-dimensional laminar boundary layer with a planar jet injected from a wall are investigated using a fully implicit time advancement scheme. A full three-dimensional numerical simulation has been performed to qualitatively investigate the interaction of jets in a ...

Cross Flow Filtration

2018
Many of the difficulties associated with conventional filtration can be eliminated if the slurry flow is tangential to rather than directly into the filtration media. Cross flow filtration (CFF) utilizes a high fluid circulation rate tangential to the filtration barrier to minimize the accumulation of particles at the filter surface.
