Accurate cross sections for microanalysis

open access: yesJournal of Research of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2002
To calculate the intensity of x-ray emission in electron beam microanalysis requires a knowledge of the energy distribution of the electrons in the solid, the energy variation of the ionization cross section of the relevant subshell, the fraction of ionizations events producing x rays of interest and the absorption coefficient of the x rays on the path

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Are Pixel Intensities Proportional To Radar Cross Section In SAR Images?

open access: yes, 2012
Radar cross section has long been the measurement quantity of choice to describe the radar reflectivity of point targets in calibrated synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images.

Measurement of the bb¯ Cross Section in 800 GeV/c Proton-Silicon Interactions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
The cross section for bb̅ production in 800GeV/c pN interactions has been measured in Fermilab experiment E771 to be 43-17+27(stat)-7+7(syst)nb per nucleon from the observation of events in which both the b and the b̅ decay semimuonically or a B decays ...

α‐Synuclein aggregation landscape from phase separation to neurotoxic intermediates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Alpha‐synuclein aggregation in Parkinson's disease involves a complex landscape of transient intermediates, including oligomers, fibrils and liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS). A view is emerging in which LLPS maturation into solid‐like condensates may contribute to the formation of neurotoxic species.

Investment Horizon and the Cross Section of Expected Returns: Evidence from the Tokyo Stock Exchange [PDF]

open access: yes
Using data from the Tokyo Stock Exchange, we study how beta, size, and ratio of book to market equity (BE/ME) account for the cross-section of expected stock returns over different lengths of investment horizons.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.
