Crotalaria spectabilis Poisoning in Swine

SUMMARY When a ration containing corn contaminated by Crotalaria spectabilis seeds was fed to a herd of swine, 76 of 150 pigs died. Deaths first occurred 6 weeks after initial consumption of the ration and 3 weeks after the loss of black hair, the 1st clinical sign observed.

Crotalaria as a cover crop is gaining attention in our country's conservation program. This genus of the legume or pulse family consists of more than 600 species. Of this number at least six are known to be very toxic to cattle, sheep, and horses, namely, C. sagittalis, C. juncea, C. burkeana, C. dura, C. globifera, and C. spectabilis.

Monocrotaline and a new alkaloid, spectabiline, are isolated from Crotalaria spectabilis Roth. in nearly equal amounts. Spectabiline is shown to be an O-acetylmonocrotaline and has been prepared by acetylation of monocrotaline.

Abstract Eighteen feeder pigs each received a cumulative dose of 84 g. of ground Crotalaria spectabilis seeds in 43 days. Varying degrees of lack of thrift were seen in all pigs. During the experiment 2 pigs died from crotalaria poisoning. The survivors were necropsied in 2 groups, 70 and 90 days after the experiment began.

Showy crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilisRoth) seed dormancy was due to seed coat impermeability to water. The seed coats became impermeable during later stages of maturation on the plant. When incubated immediately after harvest, 9% of the mature, black seeds (11% water content) imbibed water and germinated.
