We built a machine to find historical patterns. Its strongest pattern failed every test, and the reason is a lesson in who gets counted as a crowd, and who gets counted some other way.A pattern machine read four hundred years of American crowds and missed the deepest lineage of protest in the country. The miss was not a glitch.
