New distributional records for the Crowned Eagle (Harpyhaliaetus coronatus) in Western Argentina [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The Crowned Eagle, Harpyhaliaetus coronatus, is regarded as endangered because of its low population numbers, the destruction of potential habitat, and the scarcity of records. Ecological studies on this species are required to develop conservation plans.

Recovery of great blue herons (Ardea herodias) within the Chesapeake Bay

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 8, November 2026.
We surveyed great blue herons throughout the tidal reach of the Chesapeake Bay in 2013 and mapped 423 colonies supporting 15,094 pairs. The population has increased more than four‐fold since the mid‐1970s. Colony size has declined. Invasion of colonies by bald eagles may be driving a change in spatial structure.

Integrating vision, audition and olfaction traits: a roadmap for contrasting sensory ecologies of birds and rodents

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2026, Issue 11, November 2026.
Sensory ecology seeks to understand how organisms detect and use information from their environment, yet comparative analyses across multiple sensory modalities remain rare. Here, we present a roadmap for contrasting the sensory ecologies of birds and rodents using surrogate morphological and acoustic traits associated with vision, audition, and ...

Persistent declines in forest‐dependent birds following active restoration of logged tropical forest in Borneo

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 11, November 2026.
Despite substantial carbon benefits, active restoration within selectively logged forests may impede the recovery of forest‐dependent biodiversity. This challenges the common assumption embedded within nature‐based climate solutions that carbon and biodiversity outcomes will necessarily align.
