Demonstration of an Optical Cryocooler

Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics/International Quantum Electronics Conference, 2009
We present the first observation of cryogenic operation in an all-solid-state refrigerator. A temperature drop of ∼150 K is demonstrated in a 0.2 cm3 rare-earth doped fluoride crystal (Yb:YLF) using anti-Stokes fluorescence, at a record cooling power of 110 mW.

On the cryocooling by ideal gases: A review (by the unified model of cryocoolers)

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2020
Abstract Cryocooling by ideal gases is the counter version of cryocooling based on real gas properties. In view of the unified model, coolers of ideal gas refrigerants (Stirling, Solvay, reverse Brayton, Gifford-McMahon, Pulse Tube, Simon) become completely analogous; their similarity is expressed by a common formulation of performance and that is ...

Thermodynamic performance of a laser cryocooler

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2007
The quantum dynamic action of a laser cooling system is analyzed by means of a simplified luminescence center model with ground state and excited state in this paper. The thermodynamic performance of a laser cryocooler is described by solving quantum master equation.

Cryocoolers for Healthcare

2020
This chapter shows the great impact cryocoolers made and continue to make in their emerging role as workhorse in the healthcare industry. Their great impact is particularly noticeable in MRI, PET, and many other small or large healthcare applications; for example, metabolic imaging and preclinical applications that would be unthinkable without the use ...

Experimental demonstration of cryocooler electronics with multiple mechanical cryocooler types

SPIE Proceedings, 2012
This paper describes a series of experiments during which a particular cryocooler control electronics (CCE) was shown to successfully drive several very different cryocoolers and simulated cryocooler loads, including a space pulse tube cryocooler, long life tactical Stirling coolers, and even a simulated reverse turbo Brayton (RTB) cryocooler ...

Cryocooler modelling methodology

Cryogenics, 2006
Abstract Future spacecraft will increasingly use cryocoolers to improve the performance of their payloads. For system level studies, it is necessary to quickly and easily assess the impact of these coolers on the overall thermal budget of a spacecraft.

Cryocooler Electromagnetic Compatibility

1995
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, under joint Ballistic Missile and Defense Organization (BMDO)/Air Force and NASA/Eos Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) sponsorship, is conducting extensive space cryocooler characterization to provide a reliable and accurate data base on cryocooler performance for use by the space community. As the number of cryocoolers

Progress in Cryocoolers

1991
A significant number of advances have been made during the last few years in a variety of cryocoolers. This paper discusses some of these advances in Brayton, Joule-Thomson, Stirling, pulse tube, Gifford-McMahon, and magnetic refrigerators. Reliability has been a major driving force for new research areas. This paper reviews various approaches taken in
