Gene loss, pseudogenization, and independent genome reduction in non-photosynthetic species of Cryptomonas (Cryptophyceae) revealed by comparative nucleomorph genomics

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2022
Background Cryptophytes are ecologically important algae of interest to evolutionary cell biologists because of the convoluted history of their plastids and nucleomorphs, which are derived from red algal secondary endosymbionts.

SOME ASPECTS OF TAXONOMY IN THE CRYPTOPHYCEAE [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 1944
The class Cryptophyceae is one of the best defined among Flagellata. Although there is possibly some relation to Dinophyceae, the lines of demarcation are perfectly clear. Furthermore, there seems to be no transition to a true algal state, with the possible exception of Tetragonidium (of. p. I44).

The role of light quality and species richness in shaping phytoplankton communities

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 70, Issue 8, Page 2097-2108, August 2025.
Abstract In natural water bodies, the light spectrum changes with depth, often toward a higher proportion of blue light. While spectral niche partitioning and functional redundancy are important concepts, our understanding of how light spectrum changes affect phytoplankton communities is limited.

Mitosis and cytokinesis in Chroomonas africana Meyer & Pienaar (Cryptophyceae)

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Botany, 1984
Mitosis and cytokinesis have been examined in a recently described species of Chroomonas, viz. Chroomonas africana Meyer & Pienaar. A comparison between this species and the three other species in which cell division has been studied (Chroomonas salina and two Cryptomonas spp.) has revealed certain common characteristics such as an open spindle, a ...

Phytoplankton from Duas Bocas Reservoir, Espírito Santo State, Brazil (except diatoms)

open access: yesHoehnea
Duas Bocas is a small water supply reservoir (0.51 km²) located in a forested area (Duas Bocas Biological Reserve) (20º18'S and 40º28'W). Phytoplankton community was investigated by samplings weekly taken in the dry (July, 1998) and rainy (March 1999 ...

The periodicity of phytoplankton in Lake Constance (Bodensee) in comparison to other deep lakes of central Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Phytoplankton periodicity has been fairly regular during the years 1979 to 1982 in Lake Constance. Algal mass growth starts with the vernal onset of stratification; Cryptophyceae and small centric diatoms are the dominant algae of the spring bloom.
