The class Cryptophyceae is one of the best defined among Flagellata. Although there is possibly some relation to Dinophyceae, the lines of demarcation are perfectly clear. Furthermore, there seems to be no transition to a true algal state, with the possible exception of Tetragonidium (of. p. I44).

Phytoplankton periodicity has been fairly regular during the years 1979 to 1982 in Lake Constance. Algal mass growth starts with the vernal onset of stratification; Cryptophyceae and small centric diatoms are the dominant algae of the spring bloom.
