Effect of pH shifts induced by oxygenating crystalloid cardioplegic solutions

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1991
Oxygenation of a bicarbonate-containing crystalloid cardioplegic solution alters the partial pressure of both oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, oxygenating St. Thomas' Hospital II plus glucose (11 mmol/L) cardioplegic solution with 95% O2 + 5% CO2 induces a pH shift to 7.0 (10 degrees C) as opposed to pH 9.3 with 100% O2.

Treatment of Massive Hemorrhage With Colloid and Crystalloid Solutions

JAMA, 1967
An experimental model which duplicates bleeding and immediate replacement with blood substitutes was designed and used in 100 experiments on dogs. In hemo-dilution to asystole with dextrans 40 and 75 and with hydroxyethyl starch, four phases of response were seen: complete compensation, partial compensation, reversible decompensation (above 10 ...

The Use of Crystalloidal and Colloidal Solutions for Volume Replacement in Hypovolemic Shock

Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 1989
A wide variety of colloidal and crystalloidal fluids, as well as blood and blood products, are available to the clinician for treatment of the hypovolemic patient. These fluids vary with respect to the size, shape, and concentrations of electrolytes, colloidal molecules, and/or cellular components, duration of volume-expanding effects, incidence of ...

Ischemic myocardial protection. Comparison of nonoxygenated crystalloid, oxygenated crystalloid, and oxygenated fluorocarbon cardioplegic solutions.

The Journal of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, 1988
This study was designed to compare myocardial protection with a nonoxygenated crystalloid solution, an oxygenated crystalloid solution, and an oxygenated fluorocarbon cardioplegic solution. Postischemic ventricular performance was studied in three equal (N = 7) groups of dogs subjected to 120 minutes of global ischemia induced at an average myocardial ...

Effects of adenosine and defibrotide adjunct to a standard crystalloid cardioplegic solution.

The Journal of cardiovascular surgery, 2005
Adenosine has many actions potentially useful as adjunct to a cardioplegia. Defibrotide was recently shown to have protective effects during cardiac arrest. The aim of this study was to compare these 2 substances to delineate their profile of action in the setting of cardioplegic arrest.A Langendorff model for isolated rat hearts was employed: 3 groups
