Effects of flow‐controlled expiration on oxygenation and early recovery in horses undergoing general anaesthesia

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background FLow‐controlled EXpiration (FLEX) has been shown to significantly enhance oxygenation in horses under clinical and experimental conditions. Objectives To compare pulmonary gas exchange during early recovery following general anaesthesia in horses ventilated with FLEX compared with conventional intermittent positive pressure ...

Microcirculatory depth of focus measurement shows reduction of tissue edema by albumin resuscitation in burn patients

open access: yesJournal of Intensive Medicine
Background: Severe burns induce volume shifts via capillary leaks, eventually requiring massive fluid resuscitation and promoting tissue edema. Albumin may help to mitigate the edema, thereby improving perfusion.

Postoperative Weight Gain, Due to Fluid Retention After Ovarian Cancer Surgery—How Much Is too Much?

open access: yesJournal of Surgical Oncology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives Postoperative complications after cytoreductive surgery in ovarian cancer patients are associated with impaired survival. Here, we investigated the association between postoperative weight gain due to fluid retention and the development of complications and anastomotic leakage (AL).

Preclinical Efficacy and Safety Evaluation of a Novel Controlled‐Expansion ePTFE‐Covered TIPS Stent in a Swine Model

open access: yesPortal Hypertension &Cirrhosis, EarlyView.
This preclinical study evaluated a novel controlled‐expansion expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE)‐covered transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) stent in 11 swine, demonstrating 100% technical success, excellent deployability, and durable 6‐month angiographic patency without thrombosis, migration, fracture, or device‐related toxicity.

Selection of intraoperative fluid for kidney transplantation [PDF]

open access: yesAnesthesia and Pain Medicine
The kidney, the most frequently transplanted organ, represents the optimal treatment for end-stage renal disease. Transplanted kidneys are highly vulnerable to perioperative injuries such as hypotension and hypovolemia, which can be influenced by ...

Principle of intravenous fluid therapy in the neurocritically ill patients [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Neurocritical Care
Intravenous fluid therapy is a fundamental treatment in intensive care units (ICUs). Although most clinical trials have focused on patients requiring active resuscitation of the intravascular volume, such as those experiencing shock or sepsis ...

Urinary Indices of Horses After Intravenous Administration of Crystalloid Solutions [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 1993
Abstarct Saline or glucose solution was infused for approximately 4 hours into six healthy mares in two separate experiments to determine the effect of infusion of crystalloid solutions on fractional excretion (FE) of sodium (Na), chloride (Cl), potassium (K), and phosphorus (P), ratio of urinary creatinine to serum creatinine (UCr ...

Impact of general anaesthesia on immune response to first rabies vaccination in seronegative domestic cats

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Despite common concerns, evidence that anaesthesia impairs vaccine efficacy remains limited. This study assessed the impact of general anaesthesia on the immune response to rabies vaccination in cats. Methods Thirty‐five healthy female cats (6–12 months old) undergoing elective spaying were enrolled.

A Physicochemical Model of Crystalloid Infusion on Acid-Base Status

open access: yes, 2010
The objective of this study is to develop a physicochemical model of the projected change in standard base excess (SBE) consequent to the infused volume of crystalloid solutions in common use.
