Inferring camera trap detection zones for rare species using species‐ and camera‐specific traits: a meta‐level analysis

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Camera trap detection zones are critical for estimating wildlife population sizes, but data scarcity hampers accurate measurement. Through a meta‐level analysis and modeling approach, we show that biological, environmental and camera trap traits can reliably predict detection zones, and that fewer than 25 detection events can yield <15% error when ...

RRS "Charles Darwin" Cruise 169, 17 Feb-19 Mar 2005. Hydrothermal exploration of the southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The principal objective of this cruise was to identify the first site or sites of high temperature hydrothermal venting anywhere on the southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, to characterize their geological setting, preliminary chemical nature and to identify ...

Camera traps and deep learning enable efficient large‐scale density estimation of wildlife in temperate forest ecosystems

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
We tested the effect of using a readily available deep learning algorithm for animal species classification on the population density estimates of eight wild mammal species in 10 protected areas (Da). In general, there were no significant differences to the manual estimates (Dm) for all animal species and seasons.

Observations of High Frequency, Long Range Acoustic Propagation in a Harbor Environment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The positioning and navigation of AUV\u27s in harbor environments using underwater acoustics is complicated by shallow waters, long propagation distances, and complex oceanographic features.

From Membrane Composition to Antimicrobial Strategies: Experimental and Computational Approaches to AMP Design and Selectivity

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising candidates for next‐generation antibiotics, acting through mechanisms such as membrane disruption and intracellular targeting. This review examines how variations in bacterial membrane composition critically influence AMP activity.

Biocarbon Suitability Evaluation for Direct Injection in Blast Furnace Ironmaking

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study examines densified biocarbon for direct injection in blast furnace ironmaking to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG). Enhanced burnout performance, along with favorable reactivity and carbon structure of the combustion residue, supports its suitability for blast furnace injection. Modeling results indicate that up to a 27% reduction in GHG emissions

Performance of two‐to‐one non‐contact post‐installed lap splices

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract Post‐installed lap splices ensure the continuity of steel reinforcement in concrete‐to‐concrete connections by overlapping cast‐in (CI) reinforcing bars (rebars) with post‐installed (PI) rebars. Typically, the design of such splices follows provisions originally intended for CI lap splices, despite the differences in execution and bond ...
