Middle Pleistocene revelations: unravelling taphonomic processes in mammals including Mesotherium cristatum (Mesotheriidae, Notoungulata), Corralito Site, Córdoba Province, Argentina

open access: yesPalaeontology, Volume 68, Issue 4, July/August 2025.
Abstract Taphonomic studies of Cenozoic mammals are scarce. We report a study of the taphonomy of the Corralito site (Middle Pleistocene to Holocene), Córdoba Province, Argentina, which documents the last population of the South American native ungulate typotherid Mesotherium cristatum. We discovered two specimens of M.

Estimated and in vivo measurements of bite force demonstrate exceptionally large bite forces in parrots (Psittaciformes)

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 246, Issue 2, Page 299-315, February 2025.
Bite force in parrots has been explored using data from muscle masses. The values were validated by comparison with data for bite force collected from live parrots. The parrot's reputation for a strong bite force is well founded. Abstract Jaw morphology and function determine the range of dietary items that an organism can consume.

Functional and morphological divergence in the forelimb musculoskeletal system of scratch‐digging subterranean mammals (Rodentia: Bathyergidae)

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 245, Issue 3, Page 420-450, September 2024.
The muscles of scratch‐diggers (Bathyergus spp.) show a higher mechanical advantage for forelimb flexion and shoulder stabilization than tooth‐diggers. The glenohumeral and olecranon joints play fundamental roles as robust pivots to resist the action of larger muscles. Tooth‐diggers lacked some muscles aiding with elbow extension and humeral retraction,
