A study on the biodiversity of benthic invertebrates in the waters of Seogwipo, Jeju Island, Korea

open access: yesJournal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity, 2014
The biodiversity of benthic invertebrates in the intertidal and subtidal regions of Gapado, Beomseom, and Munseom islets was surveyed twice in May and September 2013 to study the state of biodiversity in Seogwipo, Jeju Island.

The Buds of Oscarella lobularis (Porifera, Homoscleromorpha): A New Convenient Model for Sponge Cell and Evolutionary Developmental Biology

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, Volume 342, Issue 8, Page 503-528, December 2024.
We describe a technique for triggering asexual reproduction by budding in vitro and have monitored bud development. The natural properties of Oscarella lobularis buds and the technical tools we developed make them a new biological system for getting insights into sponge molecular and cellular processes.

Never ending analysis of a century old evolutionary debate: unringing the urmetazoon bell

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2016
Our understanding of the early evolution of animals will be greatly improved if a final solution can be found to the evolutionary relationships between Porifera, Placozoa, Ctenophora, Cnidaria and Bilateria.

Mapping Biodiversity Coast‐to‐Coast‐to‐Coast Across Canada's Three Oceans Using eDNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 6, Issue 6, November–December 2024.
Using 86 coastal surface water samples collected during the Canada C3 expedition in the summer of 2017, we explored metazoan biodiversity across Canada's three oceans—the North Pacific, Arctic, and North Atlantic—applying multi‐marker eDNA metabarcoding.

Carbon content of Mnemiopsis leidyi eggs and specific egg production rates in northern Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi is considered to be a successful invasive species, partly due to its high reproduction potential. However, due to the absence of direct carbon measurements of eggs, specific reproduction rates remain uncertain.

Origin and evolution of microvilli

open access: yesBiology of the Cell, Volume 116, Issue 11, November 2024.
Microvilli are widespread organelles of animal cells that frequently play a role in sensation and feeding. Ansel et al. reconstitute their origin and evolution by performing a broad morphological survey of microvilli in animals and their unicellular relatives, coupled with a bioinformatic study of the phylogenetic distribution of the main microvillar ...

Changes in the non-crustacean zooplankton community in the middle Adriatic Sea during the Eastern Mediterranean Transient [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background and Purpose: Here we presented changes in the non-crustacean zooplankton community in the years characterized by the large scale changes in the thermohaline circulation in the East Mediterranean known as the Eastern Mediterranean transient ...

Evolution of the Cdk4/6–Cdkn2 system in invertebrates

open access: yesGenes to Cells, Volume 29, Issue 11, Page 1037-1051, November 2024.
Hypothesis on the evolution of the Cdkn2 locus. (a) Loss of Cdkn2 occurred multiple times. (b) Evolution of microsynteny at the Cdkn2 locus. Cdkn2e is a hypothetical transient gene. Abstract The cell cycle is driven by cyclin‐dependent kinases (Cdks). The decision whether the cell cycle proceeds is made during G1 phase, when Cdk4/6 functions.
