Adaptáció, koevolúció és stabilitás a gazda-költésparazita kapcsolatokban = Adaptation, coevolution and stability in host-brood parasite relationships [PDF]
A madarak költésparazitizmusa a gazdafaj és a költésparazita közötti koevolúció példái. A közismert kakukk (Cuculus canorus) Magyarországon szokatlanul nagymértékben (41-68%) parazitálja a nádirigót (Acrocephalus arundinaceus), lecsökkentve annak ...

Abstract The pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa, PPM) is a major defoliator in Mediterranean pine forests, with broad ecological and socioeconomic impacts. While vertebrate predators of its eggs, larvae, pupae, and imagos have been well documented, predation on adult females by mammals has not been previously described.

Predicting detection probabilities to estimate species' population sizes
Scalable study designs are needed to fill knowledge gaps on species' population sizes. We found that species detection probabilities are partly predictable—across years, sites and species—which creates opportunities for heterogeneous study designs that reduce total survey effort needed to estimate species' populations.

Syntax errors do not disrupt acoustic communication in the common cuckoo
When acoustic communication signals are distorted, receivers may misunderstand the signal, rendering it ineffective. Common cuckoos (Cuculus canorus) are popularly known for the males’ simple, two-note advertisement calls, the “cu-coo” used for declaring

Host–parasite oxidative arms race: who will win?
Avian haemosporidian parasites are globally widespread with a broad repertoire of hosts. When infected, the host can either reduce (resistance) and/or limit the severity of parasitaemia (tolerance). Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the host's resistance and tolerance, as well as its detrimental endpoints.

Breeding habitat preferences and niche partitioning of insectivorous songbirds in Alpine grasslands
Alpine grasslands are increasingly facing pressures of climate and land‐use changes. Higher temperatures and pastoral abandonment lead to treeline shift and to bush encroachment, while agricultural intensification causes soil eutrophication and landscape homogenization. Alpine grasslands in Europe host important populations of mountain specialists that

Egg discrimination along a gradient of natural variation in eggshell coloration [PDF]
Accurate recognition of salient cues is critical for adaptive responses, but the underlying sensory and cognitive processes are often poorly understood. For example, hosts of avian brood parasites have long been assumed to reject foreign eggs from their ...
