Effects of Species Richness and Turnover on Ecosystem Functioning in Heterogeneous Environments of Two Tropical Mountains

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Progress has been made in understanding the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) in both experimental and real‐world ecosystems. Yet, we have a limited understanding of the extent to which biodiversity affects ecosystem functioning in heterogeneous environments and whether variation in ecosystem functioning ...

Phylogenetic conservatism in the relationship between functional and demographic characteristics in Amazon tree taxa

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 181-198, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Leaf and wood functional traits of trees are related to growth, reproduction, and survival, but the degree of phylogenetic conservatism in these relationships is largely unknown.

Geography and ecology shape the phylogenetic composition of Amazonian tree communities

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 51, Issue 7, Page 1163-1184, July 2024.
Abstract Aim Amazonia hosts more tree species from numerous evolutionary lineages, both young and ancient, than any other biogeographic region. Previous studies have shown that tree lineages colonized multiple edaphic environments and dispersed widely across Amazonia, leading to a hypothesis, which we test, that lineages should not be strongly ...

Revealing hidden biodiversity: Novel insights on reptile and amphibian distribution in western Ecuador

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2024.
We present notable distributional updates for 14 species from western Ecuador (seven amphibians and seven reptiles). Abstract We present notable distributional updates for 14 species from western Ecuador (seven amphibians and seven reptiles). Our findings include the northernmost confirmed sighting of Pristimantis kuri and the southernmost documented ...

Systematic reduction in seed rain of large‐seeded and endozoochorous species in pastures compared to forests along a tropical elevational gradient

open access: yesApplied Vegetation Science, Volume 27, Issue 2, April/June 2024.
By analyzing variation in seed rain among old‐growth montane forests and livestock pastures along a 2,000 m elevational gradient in the tropical Andes of southern Ecuador, this study reveals that large seeds and endozoochorous species are less prevalent in seed rain from pastures compared to seed rain from forests at the same elevation.

Failing kidneys: Hotspots, blind spots and biopolitics of indifference

open access: yesMedical Anthropology Quarterly, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 24-39, March 2024.
Abstract Chronic kidney disease of non‐traditional cause (CKDnt) is commonly associated with monocropping agriculture, heat stress and impoverished working conditions, referred to as CKDnt “hotspots.” The condition is also emerging in various sites of environmental contamination, raising questions as to whether multiple variants of the condition exist ...
