Reptile responses to fire across the western Mediterranean Basin. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol
Abstract Effects of anthropogenic activities, including climate change, are modifying fire regimes, and the dynamic nature of these modifications requires identification of general patterns of organisms’ responses to fire. This is a challenging task because of the high complexity of factors involved (including climate, geography, land use, and species ...

Sporulation is dispensable for the vegetable-associated life cycle of the human pathogen Bacillus cereus. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrob Biotechnol, 2021
Bacillus cereus is a common food‐borne pathogen Sporulation is not a determinant for the persistence of enterotoxigenic B. cereus on ready‐to‐eat vegetables. Summary Bacillus cereus is a common food‐borne pathogen that is responsible for important outbreaks of food poisoning in humans. Diseases caused by B.

Long‐term hydrological and biogeochemical datasets from a Mediterranean forest site (Montseny, NE Spain)

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 37, Issue 5, May 2023., 2023
Hydrological and biogeochemical datasets made available in the Zenodo platform for two catchments in Montseny (Catalonia, Spain) for the period 1978–2018. Abstract We present here, and make freely available, two long‐term datasets on the hydrology and hydrochemistry of two small catchments totally or partially covered by holm oak (Quercus ilex) forests.

Alarming decline of freshwater trigger species in western Mediterranean key biodiversity areas

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 5, Page 1367-1379, October 2021., 2021
Abstract Theidentification of key biodiversity areas (KBA) was initiated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2004 to overcome taxonomic biases in the selection of important areas for conservation, including freshwater ecosystems.

Species–area relationships on small islands differ among plant growth forms

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 29, Issue 5, Page 814-829, May 2020., 2020
Abstract Aim We tested whether species–area relationships of small islands differ among plant growth forms and whether this influences the prevalence of the small‐island effect (SIE). The SIE states that species richness on small islands is independent of island area or relates to area in a different way compared with larger islands.

Expert perceptions regarding the effectiveness and feasibility of nature‐based solutions for climate change adaptation in a large Mediterranean Basin

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 10, Page 2511-2531, October 2025.
Abstract Floods and droughts are becoming increasingly frequent and intense in the Mediterranean region. Nature‐based solutions (NBS) are being put forward as cost‐effective solutions for climate change adaptation to reduce the impacts of floods and droughts and provide multiple other benefits and ecosystem services.

Developing epidemiological preparedness for a plant disease invasion: Modelling citrus huánglóngbìng in the European Union

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 5, Page 1403-1423, September 2025.
Huánglóngbìng (HLB) is a bacterial disease of citrus that has significantly impacted Brazil and the United States, although citrus production in the Mediterranean Basin remains unaffected. By developing a mathematical model of spread in Spain, we tested surveillance and control strategies before any future HLB entry in the EU.
