Neoclassical development of genetic sexing strains for insect pest and disease vector control

open access: yesInsect Science, Volume 33, Issue 2, Page 618-639, April 2026.
The sterile insect technique has been effectively used for decades, and an important component is the availability of sex separation systems, in particular genetic sexing strains. Classical approaches, such as irradiation‐induced chromosomal translocations, have yielded stable strains for species like the Mediterranean fruit fly.

Conspecific and allospecific larval extracts entice mosquitoes to lay eggs and may be used in attract-and-kill control strategy. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
One of the strategies of integrated vector management is to lure gravid mosquitoes for surveillance purposes or to entice them to lay eggs in water containing toxins that kill the offspring (attract-and-kill or trap-and-kill).

Field Evaluation of the Bio-Efficacy of Three Pyrethroid Based Coils against Wild Populations of Anthropophilic Mosquitoes in Northern Tanzania. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This study aims to assess the feeding inhibition and repellency effect of three brands of mosquito coils in experimental huts (East African design). Evaluated products were all pyrethroid-based mosquito coils-Kiboko(R), Total(R) and Risasi(R).

Tetraopes Milkweed Beetle Genomes Elucidate the Adaptive Basis of a Temperate Coevolutionary Radiation

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT The coevolutionary radiation of 27 species of Tetraopes longhorned beetles and their Asclepias milkweed hosts represents a classic example of adaptive evolution driven by plant chemical defences and herbivore counteradaptations. Investigations to date, however, have focused on a single species, Tetraopes tetrophthalmus, which feeds on the ...

Understanding the Wolbachia-mediated inhibition of arboviruses in mosquitoes: progress and challenges [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) pose a considerable threat to human and animal health, yet effective control measures have proven difficult to implement, and novel means of controlling their replication in arthropod vectors, such as mosquitoes, are
