Measuring public-health outcomes of release of transgenic mosquitoes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The transgenic RIDL method could ensure that male mosquitos can be released without biting females and that the males would have no female progeny after mating to wild females.

Olfactory responsiveness of Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae): Interactions between species, age and attractants

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2021
Invasive mosquitoes are vectors of important human and animal pathogens and a serious threat to public health. Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae) and Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) (Diptera: Culicidae) are good examples because of their wide ...

Revision of the Atratus Group of Culex (Melanoconion) (Diptera: Culicidae)

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2020
Background Despite the importance of some species of Culex (Melanoconion) (Diptera: Culicidae) as vectors of several arboviruses that cause diseases in humans and other animals, there are few taxonomic studies focusing on species of the subgenus ...

Key to the females of Afrotropical Anopheles mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae)

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2020
In 1987, Gillies and Coetzee published a pictorial key for the morphological identification of adult female mosquitoes. Since then, several new species of anopheline mosquitoes have been described.

Culicidae evolutionary history focusing on the Culicinae subfamily based on mitochondrial phylogenomics

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2020
Mosquitoes are insects of medical importance due their role as vectors of different pathogens to humans. There is a lack of information about the evolutionary history and phylogenetic positioning of the majority of mosquito species. Here we characterized

Morphological and molecular identification of Culicidae mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Lorestan province, Western Iran [PDF]

open access: yesHeliyon, 2020
Culicidae mosquitoes are main vectors of arboviruses that cause arboviral diseases in humans. Studies on fauna, ecology, biology, resting behaviors of Culicidae mosquitoes are important and greatly impacts the control of arboviral diseases that are transmitted by vectors.

West Nile Virus Mosquito Vectors (Diptera: Culicidae) in Germany

open access: yesViruses, 2020
In 2018, West Nile virus (WNV) broke out for the first time in Germany, with continuation of the epidemic in 2019, involving birds, horses and humans. To identify vectors and characterize the virus, mosquitoes were collected in both years in zoological ...

A genome‐wide phylogeny and the diversification of genus Liriomyza (Diptera: Agromyzidae) inferred from anchored phylogenomics

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 48, Issue 1, Page 178-197, January 2023., 2023
Phylogenetic relationships are reconstructed among the Liriomyza leafminers using phylogenomic analysis of nuclear gene loci obtained by anchored hybrid enrichment (AHE). Trees inferred using multiple data types and analysis methods are congruent and individual clade support confirms morphological species groups and relationships among them.

Impact of livestock on a mosquito community (Diptera: Culicidae) in a Brazilian tropical dry forest

open access: yesRevista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical, 2015
INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the effects of cattle removal on the Culicidae mosquito community structure in a tropical dry forest in Brazil.METHODS: Culicidae were collected during dry and wet seasons in cattle presence and absence between August ...
