Vector abundance plays a key role in transmission of mosquito-borne disease. In Hawaii, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae), the Asian tiger mosquito, has been implicated in locally-transmitted dengue outbreaks, while Culex quinquefasciatus Say

Survey of the Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) of Mayotte
A transversal survey of immature mosquitoes was conducted on Mayotte Island (France) in the Comoros Archipelago, western Indian Ocean, with the aim to inventory the Culicidae and to document inter-species relationships in different habitats. In total 420 habitats were sampled for larvae and/or pupae mosquitoes, resulting in more than 6,000 specimens ...

All-in-One Mosquito Containers: From the Laboratory to the Release Sites
Integrated vector control programs that use a Sterile Insect Technique approach require the production and release of large numbers of high quality, sterile male insects. In pilot projects conducted worldwide, sterile males are usually kept in containers

Stress in dipteran insects mass‐reared for sterile insect technique applications
The connections between biotic and abiotic stress affecting mass‐reared dipteran insects and the associated stress and immunological responses. Numbers indicate the order in which the topics are discussed in this review. Abstract Stress may be viewed as the disturbance of homeostasis of an organism.

Eukaryotic nucleic acid methyltransferase (MTase) proteins are essential mediators of epigenetic and epitranscriptomic regulation. DNMT2 belongs to a large, conserved family of DNA MTases found in many organisms, including holometabolous insects such as ...

This study identifies Polychromophilus sp. in blood‐feeding flies (Basilia speiseri and Basilia lindolphoi) from Myotis nigricans bats in Brazil, marking the first molecular detection of the parasite in an insect vector in this country. Two haplotypes were identified, both within the Polychromophilus murinus group.

Identification and characterisation of mosquitoes from different locations in Qatar in 2017–2019
Mosquito-borne infections have considerable consequences for public health. The mere presence of a single case of vector-borne disease (VBD) introduces a risk to the local community particularly when associated with the compatible vector, host, and ...

Zebra stripes: the questions raised by the answers
ABSTRACT Multiple hypotheses have been suggested to explain why the three zebra species (Equus quagga, E. grevyi and E. zebra) are striped. We review how well these theories explain the nature (rather than simply the existence) of the stripes. Specifically, we explore how well different theories explain (i) the form of zebra stripes (especially on ...
