Molecular identification of Culicoides oxystoma and Culicoides actoni vectors of bluetongue virus

Medical and Veterinary Entomology, 2023
Abstract Bluetongue is a non‐contagious viral disease causing significant economic losses throughout the world. The bluetongue vectors Culicoides oxystoma and Culicoides actoni , which play a significant role in the transmission of ...

Flight behavior of adult Culicoides oxystoma and Culicoides maculatus under different temperatures in the laboratory

Parasitology Research, 2010
The flight behavior of adult Culicoides biting midges is associated with their likelihood to reach nearby host animals and spread diseases. Therefore, evaluating the effects of atmospheric factors on the flight performances of these insects is important for understanding the spread of diseases in various circumstances.

Isolation of akabane virus from the biting midge Culicoides oxystoma in Japan

Veterinary Microbiology, 1987
Akabane virus was isolated from the biting midge, Culicoides oxystoma, collected in a cowshed in Kagoshima on Kyushu Island of Japan. This is the first report on the isolation of Akabane virus from biting midges of the genus Culicoides in Japan. Two calves kept as bait in the cowshed seroconverted to Akabane virus. These results strongly suggest that C.

Isolation of haemolytic bacilli from field‐collected C ulicoides oxystoma and C ulicoides peregrinus : potential vectors of bluetongue virus in W est B engal, I ndia

Medical and Veterinary Entomology, 2015
Two haemolytic bacterial strains of Bacillus pumilus (CU1A, CU1B) and one blood-utilizing strain of Bacillus licheniformis (CU2B) were isolated from relatively low numbers of field-collected females of Culicoides oxystoma and Culicoides peregrinus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). A total of 36 females, including 18 of each of C. oxystoma and C.

Isolation and preliminary characterization of an orbivirus of the Palyam serogroup from biting midge Culicoides oxystoma in Japan

Veterinary Microbiology, 1989
An orbivirus of the Palyam serogroup was isolated from Culicoides oxystoma collected in a cowshed in Kagoshima, Southern Kyushu Island, Japan. This is the first isolation of an orbivirus of the Palyam serogroup in Japan. The virus was a spherical non-enveloped RNA virus, approximately 60 nm in diameter.

Isolation of Chuzan virus, a new member of the Palyam subgroup of the genus Orbivirus, from cattle and Culicoides oxystoma in Japan

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1988
SUMMARY Five virus strains with identical antigenic properties were isolated from 3 rbc suspensions obtained from 2 healthy sentinel calves and from 2 pools of Culicoides oxystoma in cultures of a hamster lung cell line (HmLu-1). The virus was tentatively named Chuzan virus.

Vertical Distribution of a Biting Midge, Culicoides oxystoma (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) During Different Seasons in the Hooghly Estuary, Sagar Island, India

International Journal of Tropical Insect Science, 1988
Vertical distribution of different larval instars and pupae of Culicoides oxystoma in different depths in the mud and sandflats of Hooghly estuary were studied in relation to soil temperature and moisture at three stations in and around Sagar Island during March 1983 to February 1984.

Wing vein shape signal in Culicoides oxystoma (Schultzei group) in Nigeria – Tool for discrimination (diptera: Ceratopogonidae) using geometric approach

Zoologischer Anzeiger, 2019
Abstract Culicoides oxystoma, C. enderleini, C. schultzei and C. subschultzei belong to the Schultzei group of biting midges in the Order Diptera and are members of the Nematocera sub-order. They are vectors of economically important livestock diseases.

Elucidating the life history parameters of Culicoides oxystoma (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) under varied substrate compositions and temperatures

Journal of Medical Entomology
Abstract A comprehensive study was conducted on the life history parameters of an important vector Culicoides oxystoma Kieffer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), to standardize potential rearing procedures. Data on life history traits and rearing conditions are crucial for establishing laboratory colony and conducting vector competence-based ...
