Understanding and Reducing Warm and Dry Summer Biases in the Central United States: Improving Cumulus Parameterization

Journal of Climate, 2022
Most climate models still suffer large warm and dry summer biases in the Central United States (CUS). As a solution, we improved cumulus parameterization to represent 1) the lifting effect of small-scale rising motions associated with Great Plains low ...

The hourly precipitation frequencies in the tropical-belt version of WRF: sensitivity to cumulus parameterization and radiative schemes

Journal of Climate, 2021
The sensitivity of hourly precipitation to cumulus parameterizations and radiative schemes is explored by using the tropical-belt configuration of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model.

Cumulus Parameterization and CISK

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1973
Abstract Arakawa's recent parameterization of the effects of a cumulus ensemble on the large-scale environment is applied to the problem of conditional instability of the second kind (CISK). In particular, Charney's linear, two-level, line-symmetry CISK model of the ITCZ is re-examined using a simplified non-entraining cloud version of the Arakawa ...

Diurnal cycle of precipitation over the Maritime Continent simulated by a spectral cumulus parameterization

, 2020
The validity of a spectral cumulus parameterization (spectral scheme) for simulating a diurnal cycle of precipitation over the Maritime Continent (MC) was examined using a regional atmospheric model.

Evaluating Cumulus Parameterization Schemes for the Simulation of Arabian Peninsula Winter Rainfall

, 2020
This study investigates the sensitivity of winter seasonal rainfall over the Arabian Peninsula (AP) to different convective physical parameterization schemes using a high-resolution WRF Mod...

Cumulus parameterizations in chemical transport models

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1995
Global three‐dimensional chemical transport models (CTMs) are valuable tools for studying processes controlling the distribution of trace constituents in the atmosphere. A major uncertainty in these models is the subgrid‐scale parametrization of transport by cumulus convection.

A Climatological Parameterization for Cumulus Clouds

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1991
Abstract A research airplane was used to study the microphysical characteristics of ice-free, nonprecipitating summertime cumulus clouds in Montana. Each cloud was penetrated at a multiplicity of levels encompassing, in general, a large fraction of the cloud depth. Similar studies covering a more limited altitude range were made in New Mexico.

Cumulus Parameterization and Rainfall Rates I

Monthly Weather Review, 1980
Abstract Modeling of convective rainfall rates is a central problem in tropical meteorology. Toward numerical weather prediction efforts the semi-prognostic approach (i.e., a one time-step prediction of rainfall rates) provides a relevant test of cumulus parameterization methods.

The Kuo Cumulus Parameterization

1993
The Kuo cumulus parameterization (Kuo 1965, 1974) is one of the earliest and most enduringly popular schemes for parameterizing cumulus convection. The purposes of this paper are to describe the scheme and some of the more notable variations on it and to make a critical evaluation of its suitability for use under various circumstances.
