Intelligent control of cupola furnaces
Proceedings of the Thirty-Fourth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory (Cat. No.02EX540), 2003The objective of this research is to improve the efficiency of the cupola operation in the presence of desired output changes. This is achieved by developing an automatic controller for the cupola furnace. A controller was previously developed that provided tight control over the output parameters of the cupola under little or no desired change.

Robust control of cupola iron furnaces
Proceedings of the 1997 American Control Conference (Cat. No.97CH36041), 1997We present the results of a continuing effort towards the introduction of automatic control to the operation of cupola iron furnaces. The cupola furnace has played an important role in the foundry industry since its invention in 1794. The main aim of this research is to improve the operational efficiency and performance of the cupola furnace.

Oxygen enrichment of blast in cupola furnace
Steel in Translation, 2007g O (m 3 /(m 2 s)) and the initial oxygen content O 2i in the blast. Analysis of the oxygen consumption in combustion (I) (II) taking into account that the volume of 1 mol of any gas in normal conditions ( p = 10 5 Pa, T = 293 ° C) is 22.4 l, leads to the ...

Selecting the properties of metallurgical coke for cupola furnaces
Coke and Chemistry, 2015Analysis of the chemical composition of solid fuel permits the identification of the optimal proportions of its components for effective heat generation. Kinetic analysis of the oxidation of the carbon in the coke, by means of the complete curve obtained in differential scanning calorimetry with continuous heating, reveals six basic periods: drying and

Abstract In high-iron-tonnage operations, the cupola remains the most efficient source of continuous high volumes of iron needed to satisfy high production foundries or the multiple casting machines of centrifugal pipe producers. This article explores successful improvement technologies in cupola equipment, including preheated air blast,

A multivariable Smith predictor for intelligent control of a cupola furnace
Proceedings of 1995 American Control Conference - ACC'95, 2005A cupola is a furnace used for melting pig iron, scrap steel, cast iron scrap, foundry return scrap, and ferroalloys to a specified tapping temperature and chemical composition. Automatic control of the process is introduced to help improve the role of the cupola in the foundry industry by producing lower material and processing costs and improved ...

Determining the ratio of the metal components of the charge at the cupola furnace
Livarski vestnik, 2022The most important equipment in a foundry is the melting furnace. Various types of furnaces have been used for cast iron melting. In cases of melt preparation for the production at high capacities, the primary melting methods used in iron casting plants are cupola furnace or electric melt furnaces.

Cupola Furnace Slag: Its Origin, Properties and Utilization
International Journal of Metalcasting, 2019A cupola furnace is the most frequently used furnace aggregate for cast iron production. A by-product of the production of cast iron in cupola furnaces is cupola slag. Its amount is 40–80 kg per 1 tonne of the produced cast iron, and that is one of the reasons why this material is not as favoured as, for example, the blast-furnace slag.

A fuzzy-logic based expert system for cupola furnaces
Thirty-Sixth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory, 2004. Proceedings of the, 2004Successful operation of a cupola furnace is highly dependent upon the mitigation of operational problems occurring in them. Cupolas rely on the experience of the operator for a smooth operation. The focus of this research is to develop a fuzzy-logic based expert system, which would provide expert advice to a cupola operator to address multiple ...

EXPERIENCES WITH THE USE OF CUPOLA FURNACE SLAG IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
SGEM International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference EXPO ProceedingsGray cast iron is still the most used material for the production of castings. It can be made in several ways, but the most efficient and economical way to make gray cast iron is in a cupola furnace. A by-product in its production is slag, which arises from impurities that may be present in the charge, from coke, which is used as fuel for the cupola ...
