Availability and temporal heterogeneity of water supply affect the vertical distribution and mortality of a belowground herbivore and consequently plant growth. [PDF]
We examined how the volume and temporal heterogeneity of water supply changed the vertical distribution and mortality of a belowground herbivore, and consequently affected plant biomass.

Oxalate content of vegetation and termite frass in western South Africa
Abstract Oxalate salts in organic matter are potential substrates for the oxalate‐carbonate pathway, which can sequester carbon in drylands. We compared calcium oxalate (CaOx) and water‐soluble oxalate (SOx) concentrations of samples of vegetation and termite excrement (frass) collected from termite mounds in sites across a regional rainfall gradient ...

To attract mates, several coleopteran taxa release volatile sex pheromones via a behaviour termed calling. We studied a postulated calling behaviour in the seven‐spot ladybird Coccinella septempunctata L. for the first time. We also investigated the effects of immediate mating history and the presence of conspecifics on calling behaviour.

The cryptonephridial/rectal complex: an evolutionary adaptation for water and ion conservation
ABSTRACT Arthropods have integrated digestive and renal systems, which function to acquire and maintain homeostatically the substances they require for survival. The cryptonephridial complex (CNC) is an evolutionary novelty in which the renal organs and gut have been dramatically reorganised. Parts of the renal or Malpighian tubules (MpTs) form a close
