Aspects of pollen morphology in the cupressaceae

Abstract The pollen grains of seven genera in the Cupressaceae were examined by means of light and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen is spheroidal, intectate, monoporate and scabrate, microverrucate to microgemmate. The uniformity of the pollen morphology supports the systematic unity of this family.

It is a native of Greece, but has widespread distribution in both hemispheres, primarily in lower elevations, and found in Europe, Africa, Northern Asia, temperate Eurasia, India, Iran, and North America. Dioscorides described its diuretic and digestive properties, and use in cough and pectoral affections.

Cuticle on the surface of cupressaceae embryos

The embryos of Cupressus semperuirens L., Juniperus commuais L., Thuja occidentalis L. and Thuja orientalis L. (= Biota orientalis Endl.) were dissected from developing seeds and stained with auramine O. Following staining they were examined in fluorescence microscope equipped with 400 nm excitation light.
