Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

A current mode CMOS noise generator using multiple Bernoulli maps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This paper presents the analysis and design of a chaotic noise generator using statistical mechanic tools. The noise generator is a CMOS analog circuit operating in current mode, which generates chaotic signals using four Bernoulli chaotic maps with ...

AscF in the mycobacterial CIII–CIV supercomplex lacks metal and nucleotide binding but links malate oxidation to respiration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The mycobacterial CIII‐CIV respiratory supercomplex is an obligate assembly, encompassing several subunits of unknown functions. We have characterized the intracellular subunit AscF, and show that it is unlikely to be a sensor for metals or nucleotides, but is required for growth on nonfermentable energy sources, and likely works as an adapter for ...

Synthesis of switched-current Ladder Derived Group delay Equalizers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
This paper describes the design of switched-current group delay equalizers. The design process is based on the pole-zero mirroring technique; with equalizer z-transfer functions generated using an optimization algorithm.

AN ENHANCED CURRENT-CONVEYOR BASED INSTRUMENTATION AMPLIFIER WITH HIGH CMRR

open access: yesElectrica, 2019
In this work, a current-mode instrumentation amplifier with common-mode current cancellation is realized using enhanced CCII topology. Detailed CMRR analysis is performed and parameters for maximizing the CMRR are defined.

The therapeutic opportunities and pitfalls of using iron ion chelators to treat neurodegenerative diseases

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Although too much iron in the brain promotes neurodegeneration, iron ion chelators have had mixed effects in clinical trials. This review explains why; some chelators do not render the iron redox‐inactive (e.g., L1) whereas others do (e.g., desferrioxamine).
