A finite element model for ultrasonic cutting

Ultrasonics, 2006
Using a single-blade ultrasonic cutting device, a study of ultrasonic cutting of three very different materials is conducted using specimens of cheese, polyurethane foam and epoxy resin. Initial finite element models are created, based on the assumption that the ultrasonic blade causes a crack to propagate in a controlled mode 1 opening, and these are ...

Finite Element Simulation of Minimum Cutting Thickness in Micro-Cutting

Materials Science Forum, 2016
The cutting edge radius and cutting thickness as well as feed rate are in the same order of magnitude in micro-cutting. So it will appear a situation that the chip cannot be formed when the cutting thickness is less than a certain value which is the minimum cutting thickness.

Metal Cutting Mechanics, Finite Element Modelling

2008
This chapter presents a short analysis of the basics of traditional metal cutting mechanics, outlining its components and the basics of finite element modelling (FEM) of the metal cutting process. Based on a previously proposed definition of metal cutting, advanced metal cutting mechanics considers the power spent in metal cutting as the summation of ...

Prediction of Cutting Force in Bone Cutting Using Finite Element Analysis

Volume 1: Additive Manufacturing; Advanced Materials Manufacturing; Biomanufacturing; Life Cycle Engineering; Manufacturing Equipment and Automation, 2021
Abstract In orthopedic surgery, bone cutting is an indispensable procedure followed by the surgeons to treat the fractured and fragmented bones. Because of the unsuitable parameter values used in the cutting processes, micro crack, fragmentation, and thermal osteonecrosis of bone are observed.

Discrete Element Simulation of Coal Cutting

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
In order to study coal cutting mechanism, particle discrete element theory is adopted to establish numerical modeling of coal cutting processes. The paper presents a brief overview of the constitutive model and calibration of the discrete element model by simulation of the Uniaxial test and Brazilian tests and analyze the movement of picks. The results

Simulating soft tissue cutting using finite element models

2003 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (Cat. No.03CH37422), 2004
This paper presents a methodology to simulate cuts in deformable objects. It proposes a simple physical model of cutting in combination with a large displacement (Green) strain tensor formulation. Explicit finite elements are used to allow real-time simulations and fast topology updates during cutting procedures.

Discrete Element Modelling of Rock Cutting

2011
This paper presents numerical modelling of rock cutting processes. The model consists of a tool-rock system. 3D geometry is considered in the model. The rock is modelled using the discrete element method, which is suitable to study problems of multiple material fracturing like that of rock cutting.

3D Finite Element Simulation of Cutting Process Using Surface Micro-Textured Cutting Tool

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
Surface texturing has become a technique to reduce friction and wear in cutting process; laser surface texturing is a method used to create micro-dimples on the interface surface. It is considered that cutting of titanium is difficult. As the experiments are costly and time demanding, metal cutting modeling provides an alternative way for better ...

3D Finite Element Analysis of Prestressed Cutting

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
In order to reveal the adjustment principle of prestressed cutting on the residual stress of hardened bearing steel GCr15, a three-dimensional thermal elastic-viscoplastic finite element model was developed using an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation. Several key simulation techniques including the material constitutive model, constitutive

Tissue Cutting Using Finite Elements and Force Feedback

2003
This paper presents a methodology to simulate 3D cuts in deformable objects. It uses an explicit finite element approach to simulate deformations in real-time. We use a non-linear strain tensor formulation (Green tensor) to allow large displacements. Haptics is used to allow touching sensation of the cutting procedure.
