7.1 In this chapter some loosely connected aspects of metal cutting are discussed. Tool nomenclature has been dealt with first so that the various tool angles can be defined for use in the other sections. The direction of chip flow across the tool is next considered, to allow a concept of ‘effective’ rake to be established.
