Late Pleistocene Mammuthus and Cuvieronius (proboscidea) from Térapa, Sonora, Mexico

Abstract What is currently known about Mexico paleontology and specifically the proboscideans has centered in the central and southern states, with much of the north largely unknown. Here we report on Cuvieronius (Gomphotheriidae) and Mammuthus (Elephantidae) recovered from Terapa, a Late Pleistocene site in east-central Sonora.

Dental material of the South American elephantoid Cuvieronius hyodon from the Late Pleistocene of the Tarija Basin, Bolivia was sampled for a comprehensive analysis of the microstructure of the enamel. To examine variability at the dentition level, enamel samples of the upper incisor, second deciduous premolar, and molars were sectioned.

The Order Proboscidea in Mexico is composed of the families Elephantidae, Mammutidae, and Gomphotheriidae. The last one includes the genus Cuvieronius. In this paper, we present a skull identified as the first record of Cuvieronius hyodon in Valparaiso, southwestern Zacatecas.
