Blooms of cyanobacteria in a temperate Australian lagoon system post and prior to European settlement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Blooms of noxious N2 fixing cyanobacteria such as Nodularia spumigena are a recurring problem in some estuaries; however, the historic occurrence of such blooms in unclear in many cases.

Harmful blooms across a longitudinal gradient in central Europe during heatwave: Cyanobacteria biomass, cyanotoxins, and nutrients

open access: yesEcological Indicators
Climate change has increased the frequency, duration and intensity of heatwaves in Europe. These extreme events result in alterations of physical, chemical, and biological properties of lakes that may synergistically promote cyanobacterial dominance.

The fungicide azoxystrobin promotes freshwater cyanobacterial dominance through altering competition

open access: yesMicrobiome, 2019
Background Sharp increases in food production worldwide are attributable to agricultural intensification aided by heavy use of agrochemicals. This massive use of pesticides and fertilizers in combination with global climate change has led to collateral ...

A Systematic Review of Biofloc Technology and Periphyton in Giant Freshwater Prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) Aquaculture

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 2, April 2026.
Biofloc technology and periphyton‐based systems enhance the sustainable production of giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). A PRISMA‐guided review (2005 – 2024) shows that BFT improves survival (75 – 78 %) and feed efficiency, while periphyton supports natural productivity in grow‐out.

Eutrophication and cyanobacteria in South Africa’s standing water bodies: A view from space

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Science, 2015
Satellite remote sensing can make a significant contribution to monitoring water quality in South African standing water bodies. Eutrophication, defined as enrichment by nutrients, and toxin-producing cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms pose a ...

From Flames to the Ocean: Biomass Burning Aerosols Are Associated With Changes in Prokaryotic Communities in the Mediterranean Sea

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 4, April 2026.
The addition of wildfire fine ash particles (particle size < 20 μm) in Mediterranean summer seawater can increase prokaryotic growth and alter community composition over time, likely through the release of both inorganic and organic substrates by ash particles and by inducing changes in the composition of phytoplankton populations.
