Experimental Warming and Short‐Term Nutrient Effects on Nearshore Periphyton Metabolism in a Large, Oligotrophic Lake

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 61, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Periphyton blooms may be increasing in oligotrophic lakes due to warming water temperatures and increased nutrient loads associated with climate change. Such blooms decrease both water quality and the aesthetic value of nearshore areas, but identifying the mechanisms driving periphyton blooms in situ is complex.

Impact of Salinity on Cell Surface Chemistry of Cyanobacteria From Freshwater, Marine and Alkaline Environments: A Hidden Phosphorus Engine

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 10, October 2025.
The study examines the impact of salinity on surface properties of freshwater Synechocystis sp. PCC6803, marine Synechococcus sp. PCC8806 and alkaliphilic Spirulina platensis. The differences in membrane restructuring between marine and non‐marine species highlight phosphorus as an important energy resource during membrane restructuring under high ...

Spatio‐Temporal Resolution of Microbial Functions and Taxa Associated With Cyanobacterial Harmful Algae Blooms Along a 500‐Km Aquatic Continuum in the Lake Erie Watershed

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 10, October 2025.
The aquatic microbiome can influence cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms. Abundances of genes and transcripts for phosphorus acquisition, denitrification and nitrogen fixation were higher upstream, whereas in Lake Erie genes and transcripts for microcystin production were higher.

Benefit Transfer for Environmental Improvements in Coastal Areas: General vs. Specific Models [PDF]

open access: yes
In this study, we used choice experiment data to analyze the accuracy of benefit transfer (BT) between two case study areas in Sweden for attributes relevant to the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive and special consideration zones in ...

An Unexpected Facet of Extremophiles: Their Aesthetic Potential in Artistic Expression

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 18, Issue 10, October 2025.
In an era marked by environmental challenges and the proliferation of misinformation, the fusion of art and science is a strategy to promote public understanding and appreciation of complex scientific phenomena. We illustrate how the use of extremophiles offers novel avenues for artistic exploration and emphasise the benefits of such interdisciplinary ...
