Lichens are characterized as a symbiotic association, being composed of one or more fungi (mycobiont) and one or more green algae or cyanobacteria (photobiont). Lichens whose main photobiont is a cyanobacterium are called cyanolichens, and their photobiont is called cyanobiont.
