The Untapped Hydropower Potential of World's Cities

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Many large cities around the world experience frequent power outages and yet have an abundance of tall buildings and experience rainfall. This represents a unique and scalable opportunity for cities to capture the intermittent rainwater at high elevation and convert the potential energy into electricity for rechargeable batteries at street ...

Internal physiological drivers of leaf development in trees: Understanding the relationship between non‐structural carbohydrates and leaf phenology

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 5, Page 1151-1164, May 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plant phenology is crucial for understanding plant growth and climate feedback. It affects canopy structure, surface albedo, and carbon and water fluxes. While the influence of environmental factors on phenology is well‐documented, the role of plant intrinsic factors ...

Tree‐based modelling of ecosystem services and climate‐adaptive silviculture strategies

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 5, May 2026.
Our years‐long collaboration contributed to a robust scientific basis for the next TVSF management plan, which is currently under development. More broadly, our findings demonstrate the adaptive capacity of communities in sparsely managed climate vulnerable forests is likely insufficient to offset declines in desired ecosystem services.

Effects of chemical and biological warfare agent decontaminants on trace survival: Impact on fingermarks deposited on paper

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, Volume 71, Issue 3, Page 1405-1419, May 2026.
Abstract Chemical and biological events present a challenging environment for forensic scientists to perform their work. This research is the follow‐up of the previous article that investigated the impact of decontaminants on fingermarks deposited on glass.

Theorising the Conjuncture Through Gaza: Urban Destruction and the Intensification of Authoritarian Neoliberalism

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 58, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper deploys a Gramscian theorisation of the conjuncture to argue that the contemporary global political economy is becoming constituted through the destruction of Gaza. It contends that Gaza's destruction illuminates the current conjuncture as an intensification of earlier authoritarian neoliberal tendencies.

On the Optimal Selection of Mel‐Frequency Cepstral Coefficients for Voice Deepfake Detection

open access: yesExpert Systems, Volume 43, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The continuous evolution of techniques for generating manipulated audio, known as voice deepfakes, and the widespread availability of tools that produce convincing forgeries have created an urgent need for reliable detection methods. This work considers the dimensionality of Mel‐Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) as a core design variable

Truancy, Psychosocial Distress, and Risk Behaviors in School‐Going Adolescents: Insights From a National School‐Based Survey in the Philippines

open access: yesJournal of School Health, Volume 96, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Truancy, or unexcused school absenteeism, is linked to adolescent psychosocial and behavioral problems and may serve as a behavioral marker of developmental and ecological vulnerability. This study examined associations between truancy and psychosocial distress, violence, limited social support, and substance use among Filipino ...

mixFOCuS: A Communication‐Efficient Online Changepoint Detection Method in Distributed System for Mixed‐Type Data

open access: yesJournal of Time Series Analysis, Volume 47, Issue 3, Page 701-714, May 2026.
ABSTRACTWith the advent of the Internet of Things, it is increasingly common to have large networks of sensors, where each sensor may collect different types of data, has limited local computing resources and the ability to transmit data to a central cloud. Detecting events that trigger changes in sensor data properties is a key concern.
