Unveiling the Competitive Dynamics of Indo‐Pacific Forcings in Shaping the Interannual Variability of Indonesian Throughflow Inflow Channels

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Quantifying the relative importance of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) in shaping the spatial structure of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is crucial for climate predictability. However, different climate modes often work together, and single data and conventional methods cannot uncover their relative effects.

Wind‐Induced Coastal Upwelling Off Southeast Japan Supplying Surface Nutrients to the Kuroshio Downstream

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Wind‐induced coastal upwelling plays a significant role in ocean circulations and ecosystems. Although coastal upwelling along eastern boundaries by trade winds is well known, coastal upwelling along western boundaries and its effects in the North‐East Pacific Ocean have not been well investigated in previous studies.

Influence of Model Resolution on the Representation and Contribution of Antarctic Intermediate Water to Meridional Salt Transport in the Atlantic

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the influence of model resolution on the representation of Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) hydrographic properties and the role of eddies in the meridional transport of salt using three simulations from the HadGEM3‐GC3.1 HighResMIP family with varying ocean resolutions: the 1° LL model (parameterized eddies), the 1 ...

Asymmetric Effects of Topographic Slopes and Bottom Friction on Lagrangian and Eulerian Eddy Diffusivities in Two‐Layer QG Flow

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract We investigate how a topographic slope impacts eddy diffusivities in a two‐layer quasi‐geostrophic model. There are asymmetric effects of retrograde slopes, where the layer interface and the topography tilt in the same direction, and prograde slopes, where the interface and topography tilt in opposite directions.

Tidal Modulation of Waves Around the Aleutian Islands

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Forming a critical part of the North Pacific Great Circle Route, the narrow passes of the Aleutian Islands are considered among the United States' most treacherous waters for maritime navigation. This study investigates the tidal modulation of surface gravity waves throughout the archipelago using a high‐resolution, unstructured‐grid, coupled ...
