Propagation of a Topological Transition: the Rayleigh Instability

open access: yes, 1997
The Rayleigh capillary instability of a cylindrical interface between two immiscible fluids is one of the most fundamental in fluid dynamics. As Plateau observed from energetic considerations and Rayleigh clarified through hydrodynamics, such an ...

Detailed Analyses of Flow in Porous Media and around Cylindrical Structures

open access: yes, 2022
This thesis investigates the interaction of flow-structure-porous media in marine environment based on numerical simulations and experimental measurements. Scour protection around a mono-pile and permeable seabed around pipelines, as common marine porous structures, are examined, respectively. To simulate the flow in porous media, a volume-averaged k-ω

Straightening of low-rigid cylindrical details. Part I. Justification of the type of loading and modes at transverse straightening

open access: yesIzvestiya. Ferrous Metallurgy, 2019
For straightening of low-rigid cylindrical details like shaft and axes different types of loadings are considered which form tension different in size and in distribution. As the perspective direction, it is possible to consider correction by a bend at the influence of the distributed loading with the subsequent hardening of a billet by superficial ...

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

Braking characterization of a multi-arc cylindrical magnetorheological fluid brake

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering
To enhance the braking torque, this study proposes a multi-arc cylindrical magnetorheological fluid brake. Firstly, the structure and operational principle of the multi-arc cylindrical magnetorheological fluid brake is described in detail. Through finite

Calculating Nonlocal Optical Properties of Structures with Arbitrary Shape

open access: yes, 2010
In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 097403 (2009)], we outlined a computational method to calculate the optical properties of structures with a spatially nonlocal dielectric function.

Air‐Pressure–Actuated Vibroacoustic Metamaterial With Tunable Bandgap: Design, Modeling, and Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents the design, modeling, and characterization of air‐pressure–actuated programmable vibroacoustic metamaterials (PVAMM). The study focuses on leveraging air pressure to dynamically tune resonance frequencies for effective noise attenuation.

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Investigation of Thermo‐Chemical Processes in Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks With and Without MgO‐C Recyclate at Elevated Temperatures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates thermo‐chemical processes during high‐temperature testing of two commercial MgO‐C brick grades, one containing 47.5 wt.% MgO‐C recyclate. Using ETV, DTA/TG‐MS, XRD, and SEM/EDS/EBSD, mechanisms such as carbothermal reduction of magnesia, impurity incorporation into the secondary MgO surface layer, and calcium‐rich phase ...
