Characterization of a Recyclate‐Based MgO‐Steel Composite As‐Sintered Inert Anode Candidate After Exposure to Cryolite Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Carbon‐free inert anodes are essential for decarbonizing aluminum electrolysis. This study investigates a recyclate‐based MgO‐316L steel composite anode tested under galvanostatic Hall–Héroult conditions in cryolite at 1000°C. Microstructural analysis reveals selective MgO fluorination, spinel and oxide layer formation, electrolyte infiltration, and ...

Very High Precision Determination of Low-Energy Parameters: The 2-d Heisenberg Quantum Antiferromagnet as a Test Case

open access: yes, 2010
The 2-d spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with exchange coupling $J$ is investigated on a periodic square lattice of spacing $a$ at very small temperatures using the loop-cluster algorithm.

On‐Demand Activation of Thin Alginate Shell Encapsulated Volatile Liquid for Untethered Pneumatic Soft Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐changing liquids enable untethered pneumatic actuation in soft robotics but suffer from volatility and storage challenges. This work reports a simple method to encapsulate Novec 7000 within micron‐thin alginate shells via in situ injection and ionic crosslinking.

Circuit Model of Curved Ultra Wideband (UWB) Antenna

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2017
This paper studies the effect of curved antenna performance on Ultra Wideband (UWB) characteristics, particularly on impedance bandwidth. A UWB antenna is designed, after which is curved and conformed onto cylindrical radius of 150 mm, 120 mm, 90 mm and ...

Electrodynamics of a Magnet Moving through a Conducting Pipe

open access: yes, 2005
The popular demonstration involving a permanent magnet falling through a conducting pipe is treated as an axially symmetric boundary value problem. Specifically, Maxwell's equations are solved for an axially symmetric magnet moving coaxially inside an ...

Al–Cu Composite Casting of Laser‐Deoxidized Copper: Bonding, Interfacial Chemistry, and Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

Beamforming of Joint Polarization-Space Matched Filtering for Conformal Array

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2013
Due to the polarization mismatch of the antenna, the received signal suffers from energy loss. The conventional beamforming algorithms could not be applied to the conformal array because of the varying curvature.

Peculiar Properties of Loop Nanoantennas

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2011
The distinguishing features of circular loop nanoantennas based on cylindrical nanorods are thoroughly investigated by using numerical simulations. In particular, resonances of the input impedance are related to the resonant behavior of the plasmonic ...

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.
