Cytological studies in Cyprinidae (Pisces) [PDF]

open access: yesHereditas, 2009
The chromosome numbers of six species belonging to Cyprinidae have been studied. Abramis ballerus (L) has 2n = 52 and an N.F. value of 70, Abramis brama (L) 2n = 52 and an N.F. value of 82. Aspius aspius (L) 2n = 52 and an N.F. value of 94, Rutilus rutilus (L) 2n = 50 with an N.F. value of 76, Scardinius erythrophtalamus (L) 2n = 48 with an N.F.

Bilateral Asymmetry in Asterisci Otoliths of Cyprinion kais and C. macrostomum (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae) collected from Tigris River, Şirnak Region, Türkiye

open access: yesZoodiversity, 2023
Otolith traits such as size and mass were investigated in 60 fish specimens of C. kais and C. macrostomum collected from the Tigris River, Şırnak region, Türkiye collected from September 2015 to December 2015.

First empirical evidence of naturally occurring androgenesis in vertebrates [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2017
Androgenesis among vertebrates is considered a rare phenomenon, with some cases reported so far, but linked to experiments involving gamete manipulation (artificial androgenesis).

Exposure to the Oestrogenic Pollutant 17α‐Ethinyl Estradiol (EE2) Does Not Alter the Behaviour of a Coastal Marine Fish, Cristiceps australis

open access: yesEthology, EarlyView.
Environmental contamination with the synthetic estrogen 17α‐ethinyl estradiol (EE2) is widespread in coastal ecosystems, yet behavioural effects in marine fishes remain poorly understood. We exposed southern crested weedfish (Cristiceps australis) to low and high EE2 concentrations for 14 days and assessed boldness and anxiety using a refuge‐use assay.

Freshwater fishes of the Waterberg aquatic ecoregion, South Africa: Diversity, taxonomic conflicts and conservation concerns

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Southern Africa is a region denoted by both high levels of fish diversity, some of it cryptic and unrecognised by current taxonomy, and severely threatened freshwater ecosystems. The Waterberg, a key aquatic ecoregion of the greater Limpopo River basin in South Africa, represents an area with high terrestrial conservation value but is lacking ...

On the conflict between science and ethics: the case of the moggel, Labeo umbratus (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) from South Africa

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Recent molecular evidence showed that Labeo umbratus comprises two allopatrically distributed genetic lineages, a northern lineage confined to the Orange‐Vaal River system where this species was originally described and a southern lineage with three geographically separated haplogroups (western, central and eastern) distributed across multiple

River Ecosystem Degradation and Its Impacts on Fish Biodiversity and Capture Fisheries in Major River Basins of Bangladesh: A Policy‐Focused Study

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT This study investigates the widespread degradation of river ecosystems in Bangladesh and its impact on fish biodiversity and identifies potential strategies for ecosystem restoration. Combining community perceptions from focus group discussions (FGDs) with fish market study for spatial analyses of fish species diversity across the Barak–Meghna,

Diversification of prey capture techniques among the piscivores in Lake Tana's (Ethiopia) Labeobarbus species flock (Cyprinidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Lake Tana harbours the only known intact species flock of large cyprinid fishes (15 Labeobarbus spp.). One of the most curious aspects of this species flock is the large number (8) of piscivorous species.
