Submicroscopic structure of spermatozoa of a cyprinodontiform teleost, Jenynsia lineata
Zeitschrift fr Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie, 1967A submicroscopical study of Jenynsia lineata spermatids and spermatozoa has been made. The formation of an axial nuclear cavity by folding is described. A sub-mitochondrial net with a very geometrical pattern has been found in the mid piece; to the author's knowledge this structure is not comparable to any other described up to now.

HISTORICAL BIOGEOGRAPHY OF THE LIVEBEARING FISH GENUS POECILIOPSIS (POECILIIDAE: CYPRINODONTIFORMES)
Evolution, 2002To assess the historical biogeography of freshwater topminnows in the genus Poeciliopsis, we examined sequence variation in two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome b (1140 bp) and NADH subunit 2 (1047 bp). This widespread fish genus is distributed from Arizona to western Colombia, and nearly half of its 21 named species have distributions that border on ...

The Sertoli cell contributes to spermatogenesis acting in the differentiation of germ cells and being the only somatic cells present in the germinal compartment. So that spermatogenesis is primarily dependent of Sertoli-Sertoli and Sertoli-germ cell interactions once Sertoli cells provide critical factors necessary for a successful differentiation of ...

Sound Production in Cyprinodon bifasciatus (Cyprinodontiformes)
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2000Sound production in Cyprinodon bifasciatus, a pupfish endemic to the Cuatro Cienegas basin, Coahuila, Mexico, is documented. The average dominant frequency is 409 Hz, with an average duration of 55 msec. Calls were produced by males during pursuits of conspecifics and cichlids, during territory patrol, while following a female and after spawning. There

Life‐History Patterns of Cuban Poeciliid Fishes (Teleostei: Cyprinodontiformes)
Zoo Biology, 2012The following work provides basic information about the life history of 10 Cuban species of the family Poeciliidae. Adult fish stocks were captured in their natural habitat, and litters obtained from them were raised and maintained in captivity for 19 weeks. For each species, we present the mean value of newborn length (TLo), age at sexual maturity (AM)

Validity and Redescription of Profundulus balsanus Ahl, 1935 (Cyprinodontiformes: Profundulidae)
Zootaxa, 2016Profundulus balsanus was described by Ahl in 1935 and later placed in synonymy with P. punctatus. Recent molecular studies have demonstrated that specimens identified as P. balsanus belong to a distinct taxon. Herein we used a combination of morphometric, meristic, coloration and osteological data in order to demonstrate the distinctiveness of P ...

Sperm quality tests on fish are classically used for evaluating cryopreservation procedures, and they are also promising to assess aquatic toxicity and biomarkers of xenobiotic effects on reproduction. Osmotic shock from the storage medium is one of the main factors affecting sperm quality during evaluation.

Molecular systematics of the genus Allodontichthys (Cyprinodontiformes: Goodeidae)
Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries, 2002Phylogenetic analyses of cytochrome c oxidasesubunit I (627bp) and mitochondrial controlregion (338bp aligned) sequences for all knownspecies of Allodontichthys wereperformed. Allodontichthys was recoveredas monophyletic, and A. hubbsi wassupported as the most primitive member of thegenus in all analyses. Combined-data analysessuggest that A. polylepis

The gonopodia of the fishes of the tribe Cnesterodontini (Cyprinodontiformes, Poeciliidae)
Journal of Fish Biology, 1990The South American livebearing toothcarp tribe Cnesterodontini is discussed, and a description of the gonopodium of each of the species of the four genera is given, together with a figure and a synonymy.

Studies on the Blood Morphology of Three Estuarine Cyprinodontiform Fishes
Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, 1969Specimens of Fundulus heteroditus, Fundulus majalis, and Cyprinodon variegatus were bled in the field at the site of capture. Blood was obtained during all seasons and in the laboratory at intervals over a 30-day period from specimens held in two types of holding aquaria.
