Fish from urban tributaries to the Vermelho River, upper Paraguay River Basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2014
The fish fauna of urban streams is still poorly known, it difficult to assess the effects of urbanization expansion on fish species composition, for this reason the aim of this study was to provide a checklist of species that compose the ichthyofauna of ...

Divergent karyotypes of the annual killifish genus Nothobranchius (Cyprinodontiformes, Nothobranchiidae) [PDF]

open access: yesComparative Cytogenetics, 2016
Karyotypes of two species of the African annual killifish genus Nothobranchius Peters, 1868, Nothobranchius brieni Poll, 1938 and Nothobranchius sp. from Kasenga (D.R. Congo) are described. Both species displayed diploid chromosome number 2n = 49/50 for males and females respectively with multiple-sex chromosome system type X1X2Y/X1X1X2X2.

Loss, persistence and reversal of phenotypic traits

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The irreversibility of complex trait loss has long been a tenet of evolutionary biology. However, this idea is increasingly at odds with the numerous documented exceptions across the Tree of Life. We synthesise this growing body of evidence across a diverse array of taxa and traits, exploring the evolutionary conditions that enable ...

Experimentally testing the function of anal fins in the bluefin killifish, Lucania goodei

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Anal fins are thought to affect many functions, including swimming, sperm flow and signalling. However, there are few experimental demonstrations of these functions. We manipulated male anal fins by placing a cut in the fin. We found that cut males had lower fertilization rates than uncut males.
