Cystectomy is a procedure of limited scope which nevertheless has retained a role in the management of carcinoma of the bladder. It has been employed alone for cure, as a cytoreductive method in programs including other agents, as a salvage technique, and, at times, for palliation.

Analysis of 50 consecutive cystectomies performed by 1 surgeon during a 3-year period is conducted to determine the rate of complications (32 per cent) and the operative mortality (2 per cent). Rectal injury during salvage cystectomy represents the most major complication and wound infection was the most common complication.

Cystectomy and urinary diversion
Seminars in Surgical Oncology, 1997New insights into bladder cancer mechanisms have not yet produced clinical benefit. Without novel treatments, cystectomy remains the most effective local treatment, albeit the most aggressive. Uncertainty about the natural history of bladder cancer, the progression rate after other treatments, the risks of cystectomy and subsequent quality of life ...

Complications of Radical Cystectomy
2007Radical cystectomy has become a standard and arguably the best definitive form of therapy for high-grade, invasive bladder cancer. Lower urinary tract reconstruction, particularly orthotopic diversion, has been a major component in enhancing the quality of life of patients requiring cystectomy. As with any major surgery, however, complications do arise.

Lymphadenectomy with Robotic Cystectomy
Current Urology Reports, 2012It is now established that an experienced, dedicated robotic surgeon can perform a high quality extended template pelvic lymph node dissection at the time of robot-assisted radical cystectomy. The evidence for this conclusion can be seen in comparing absolute lymph node counts, percent positive lymph nodes, and oncologic outcomes from N1 patients.
