Cystoscopic correction of reflux

Vesicoureteral reflux is a well-recognized cause of childhood illness and renal damage. In the past, surgical reimplantation had been the only procedure available to gain the immediate cessation of reflux. The development of an endoscopic injection technique as a less morbid alternative to traditional surgery began in the 1980s.

One of the difficulties in removing stones from the urinary bladder with the ordinary lithotrite is that the process is not under sufficient visual control, and it is not easy to get out all of the fragments even after they have been crushed. Residual fragments become the nuclei for further stone formation.

[Cystoscope holder].

A new model of the cystoscope holder is presented with flexible metal sleeve instead of tripod, while a collar made of caprolone and fixed on a hinge serves as the holder properly. The rough position of the cystoscope is achieved by turning the flexible metal sleeve, for more precise cystoscope position--by turning the hinge.

The removal, under the guidance of the eye, of foreign bodies from the urinary bladder in women, is quite simple, because the short, easily dilatable urethra allows the introduction of a forceps alongside of the cystoscope. In the male, however, this problem is a more difficult one. Heretofore, I have resorted to the use of Young's cystoscopic rongeur.
