The increased knowledge of the natural course of cystic echinococcosis has also improved our understanding of the typical imaging features ("cysts in the cyst pattern") which can be nicely shown by imaging modalities, e. g., ultrasound and computed tomography.

In an 80-year-old man, a radiolucent laesion was seen on the panoramic radiograph of the right mandible. The localisation of the radiolucent laesion under the mandibular canal and the additional finding of fatty tissue or submandibular salivary gland in the concavity on the cone beam computed tomography are virtually probative for a Stafne cyst.

Second branchial cleft cyst with “cyst-within-cyst” appearance
Clinical Imaging, 2007A 68-year-old female consulted our hospital, complaining of a large mass on the left side of the neck. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed the characteristic internal architecture of the mass, in which a small cyst was located within a cystic mass, showing a "cyst-within-cyst" appearance.
