ABSTRACT We consider a Maxwell system on ℝ3$$ {\mathbb{R}}^3 $$ with highly oscillating periodic coefficients. It is known that the solutions converge in the weak‐ ∗$$ \ast $$ topology of L∞(0,T;L2(ℝ3))$$ {L}^{\infty}\left(0,T;\kern0.3em {L}^2\left({\mathbb{R}}^3\right)\right) $$ to the solution of a similar problem with constant coefficients given as ...

Variational approach to multimode nonlinear optical fibers
Abstract We analyze the spatiotemporal solitary waves of a graded‐index multimode optical fiber with a parabolic transverse index profile. Using the nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation approach, we derive an effective one‐dimensional Lagrangian associated with the Laguerre–Gauss modes with a generic radial mode number p and azimuthal index m.

Wave detected by LIGO is not gravitational wave [PDF]
General Relativity defines gravity like the metric of a Lorentzian manifold. Einstein formulated spacetime as quality structural of gravity, i.e, circular definition between gravity and spacetime, also Einstein denoted "Space and time are modes by which ...

Summary: We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the periodicity of solutions of mild solutions to the iterated higher-order differential equation \[ \prod_{j=1}^{n}(\frac{d}{dt}-A_j)u(t)=f(t), \quad 0 \leq t\leq T, \] in a Hilbert space. Our results are illustrated with examples and applications.

Controlled Lagrangians and Stabilization of the Discrete Cart-Pendulum System [PDF]
Matching techniques are developed for discrete mechanical systems with symmetry. We describe new phenomena that arise in the controlled Lagrangian approach for mechanical systems in the discrete context.

Boundary-value problems for wave equations with data on the whole boundary
In this article we propose a new formulation of boundary-value problem for a one-dimensional wave equation in a rectangular domain in which boundary conditions are given on the whole boundary.

"Audacity or Precision": The Paradoxes of Henri Villat's Fluid Mechanics in Interwar France [PDF]
In Interwar France, Henri Villat became the true leader of theoretical researches on fluid mechanics. Most of his original work was done before the First World War; it was highly theoretical and its applicability was questioned.
