Land use gradients drive spatial variation in Lassa fever host communities in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 95, Issue 2, Page 296-312, February 2026.
As West Africa urbanises, the risk of Lassa fever may paradoxically decrease. We found the invasive house mouse, a dominant urban species, outcompetes and displaces the primary Lassa virus host. Considering these species interactions is critical for accurately predicting future zoonotic disease patterns.

Media trends and public interest in wildfires in Tuscany, Italy

open access: yesGeographical Research, Volume 64, Issue 1, February 2026.
Wildfires have increased in intensity and frequency due to climatic and socio‐economic changes. This study analyses media habits about wildfires in Italy, particularly Tuscany. Findings show gaps and correlations between local news and wildfire events, allowing identification of critical areas where deeper risk perception analysis should be conducted ...

From Permits to Samples: Addressing Key Challenges for High‐Quality Reference Genome Generation in Europe

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT High‐quality reference genome assemblies have become essential for deepening our understanding of biodiversity, yet obtaining them for many species remains surprisingly challenging. Drawing on experiences from the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) community, we focus on permit and sample‐handling procedures leading up to nucleic acid ...

Local species‐specific effect of trees and shrubs on the incidence of the millet head miner, Heliocheilus albipunctella (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae)

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 28, Issue 1, Page 38-48, February 2026.
Abstract Understanding the interactions between crop pests, natural enemies and semi‐natural habitats in agricultural landscapes is crucial for developing ecology‐based pest management in agroecosystems. In the present study, we investigated the local‐scale species‐specific effect of tree and shrub cover and diversity on the incidence and natural pest ...
