An Enhanced Spectroscopic Census of the Orion Nebula Cluster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We report new spectral types or spectral classification constraints for over 600 stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) based on medium resolution R~ 1500-2000 red optical spectra acquired using the Palomar 200" and Kitt Peak 3.5m telescopes.

A Highly Magnetic Ultramassive White Dwarf with a 23 minute Rotation Period

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a physical characterization of Tsinghua University-Ma Huateng Telescope for Survey (TMTS) J00063798+3104160 (J0006), a rapidly rotating, ultramassive white dwarf (WD) identified in high-cadence light curves from the TMTS.

Stark Broadening and White Dwarfs

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2011
White dwarf and pre-white dwarfs are the best types of stars for the application of Stark broadening research results in astrophysics, since in the atmospheres of these stars physical conditions are very favorable for this line broadening mechanism - in ...

Treatment Decision‐Making Roles and Preferences Among Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Decision‐making (DM) dynamics between adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer, parents, and oncologists remain underexplored in diverse populations. We examined cancer treatment DM preferences among an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse group of AYAs and their parents.

3D Simulations Demonstrate Propagating Thermohaline Convection for Polluted White Dwarfs

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Polluted white dwarfs (WDs) with small surface convection zones deposit significant concentrations of heavy elements to the underlying radiative interior, presumably driving thermohaline convection.

Cognitive Functioning in Vorinostat‐Treated Pediatric and Young Adult Patients Over the First 180 Days After Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose Cognitive and psychological difficulties could negatively interfere with treatment adherence and quality of life before and after hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). Methods to mitigate these changes may have positive effects on treatment success.

Detection of the Temperature Dependence of the White Dwarf Mass–Radius Relation with Gravitational Redshifts

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Models predict that the well-studied mass–radius relation of white dwarf stars depends on the temperature of the star, with hotter white dwarfs having larger masses at a given radius than cooler stars.

The Binary White Dwarf LHS 3236

open access: yes, 2013
The white dwarf LHS 3236 (WD1639+153) is shown to be a double-degenerate binary, with each component having a high mass. Astrometry at the U.S. Naval Observatory gives a parallax and distance of 30.86 +/- 0.25 pc and a tangential velocity of 98 km/s, and
