The Role of the Middle East in the Biogeographical Dispersal of Host‐Specific Parasites: Monogeneans and Their Cyprinoid Fish Hosts

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim This study investigates the diversity and phylogeny of Dactylogyrus species in the Middle East, as well as uncovers the historical dispersal routes and biogeographical contacts of cyprinoid host species using their host‐specific parasites. Location The Middle East. Taxon Dactylogyrus (Dactylogyridae: Monogenea), Cyprinoidei (Cypriniformes).

Haematological and histopathological analysis in South American fish Piaractus mesopotamicus parasitized by monogenean (Dactylogyridae) [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2014
Monogeneans are the parasites mostly found on the body surface and gills of fish and can cause large losses in farmed fish. Some studies demonstrate elevated parasitic levels causing hematological alterations. But few of them relate the effects of parasitism on the hematology and histopathology of native freshwater farmed fish. This study evaluated the

Unclear host taxonomy hinders parasite studies: An up‐to‐date checklist of the protozoan and metazoan parasites of Phoxinus minnows (Teleostei: Leuciscidae)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 105, Issue 6, Page 1501-1539, December 2024.
Abstract Phoxinus minnows are small freshwater fish found throughout Eurasia. The taxonomy of this genus is still under investigation, and new species are regularly described. They are frequently introduced outside their native range due to their use as live bait for angling, and such fish introductions can have diverse impacts on the recipient areas ...
